Hacienda CDC, a trusted community development corporation that strengthens individuals and families through affordable housing, holistic services, and advocacy, is searching for a highly strategic Director of Communications to be a pivotal figure in delivering our voice as we expand our impact.  

When you join the Communications Department at Hacienda CDC, you fill a newly created position with team members who love relational work in an internal and external community-oriented environment. Your primary tasks will include writing and directing a strategic communications plan and editorial calendar to support our growth and brand awareness, overseeing all public relations efforts, and more. 

The ideal candidate will have stellar presentation skills and be able to deliver our message with poise and credibility. They will be expert storytellers with an eye for trends and best practices while using creativity and innovation to amplify our work and create action plans. They will have a deep appreciation and respect for our mission and the communities we serve and be able to use this to drive their work.

This position's primary responsibilities include: 

  • Write and direct the implementation of a strategic communications plan and editorial calendar that supports organizational growth and brand awareness goals. 

  • Establish, cultivate, and defend the organization’s reputation. Identify challenges and emerging issues faced by the organization.  

  • Work alongside senior leaders and staff to recognize communication opportunities and solutions and define and execute appropriate strategies.  

  • Oversee the development of all print and digital communications. 

  • Manage and oversee all public relations efforts, including acting as the lead point of contact for all media interactions.  

  • Develop and execute all communications strategies related to organizational policy positions and advise leadership in effective communication with the public and stakeholders.  

  • Collaborate with all departments to execute strategic, contractual, and grant communications objectives and deliverables. 

  • Collaborate with the Communications Specialist to create the organization’s social media strategy and engagement efforts using metrics to analyze effectiveness.  

  • Manage the Communications Specialist, including complete supervisory duties such as hiring, firing, mentoring, training, disciplining, performance evaluations, and more.  


Our ideal candidate must have: 

  • A minimum of seven years’ experience in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, or a related role.  

  • A bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism, or a related field.  

  • At least three years of supervisor experience is required. 

  • Excellent English verbal, written, and communication skills, including comfort with public speaking.  

  • The ability to speak, write, and understand Spanish is required.  

  • Highly skilled at writing and storytelling, with excellent presentation skills.  

  • A holistic, strategic, and creative mindset, with excitement for our work.  

  • Self-reliant, problem solver, and results-oriented.  

  • Demonstrated ability to multitask, handle pressure, meet deadlines, and have strong project/time management skills.  

  • The ability to analyze, think critically, and exercise good judgment and sensitivity.  

  • An understanding of social media trends and best practices, with extensive experience developing, implementing, and analyzing traditional and social media metrics. 

  • Collaborative leadership style, with the ability to address conflicting needs, with past success supervising and mentoring others and inspiring teams.  

  • Proficient with MS Office and graphic design tools (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite) or multimedia content creation. 

  • Strong cultural agility skills are necessary to work effectively with diverse people, teams, and communities.  

  • A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle is required.  


It would be great if you also have: 

  • A master’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism, or a related field.  

  • Prior experience working in the non-profit sector is preferred.  

  • An established network and knowledge of the media and political climate in the state of Oregon and/or Portland, Oregon, is highly desired.  

  • Crisis communication experience is a plus.

PAY:

The salary and wage range Hacienda advertises for the position means that the starting pay offered to the candidate will fall within the range posted. We recognize that each candidate brings with them a unique combination of experiences, education, skills, and abilities; therefore, the offer will be tailored to the individual.

A bilingual Spanish premium of up to 3% is available after 90 days upon successful completion of a language assessment. (According to policy, even if language is not required or preferred, a person can get a 1% increase).
